Through my avatar, I have attempted to illustrate the concept of populism. Populism is regarded as a divisive ideology which separates society into the people and the elite. The people are represented here by the white pieces: all pawns with the exception of one king. The king symbolizes a politician who claims to speak for the will of the people. The black pieces are made up of everything except pawns. Kings, queens, rooks, bishops, and knights represent the elite members of society. In populist ideology, elites are portrayed as working against the interests of the people. The populist’s political clash between elites and people is represented here as a game of chess.
